How to extract YouTube audio as MP3 or M4A

· 6 min read

Audio is a format choice

A YouTube video can be useful without its picture: a language lesson, an interview you are allowed to archive, a lecture, or your own music upload. Audio downloading selects the sound stream and saves it in a format your player understands. It is not a licence to copy any song or broadcast without permission.

MP3 and M4A are not identical

M4A commonly keeps modern AAC audio at a good quality-to-size ratio and is sensible when your phone, car, or player supports it. MP3 is older and more universally recognized, which helps with older hardware and simple sharing, but converting to MP3 does not create extra quality.

Conversion cannot add quality

Every lossy conversion throws away some information. If the source is already compressed, converting M4A to MP3 can make the result larger while sounding no better. For listening, keep the original audio format when possible; convert only when compatibility or a specific editing workflow requires it.

Choose the format for the real device

YGet makes this choice simple without command-line flags: paste the permitted YouTube link, select the audio result if one is offered, and choose the format for the device you will use. For music you did not create, check the licence before saving or redistributing it; offline listening through YouTube Premium is a separate official option.

Tested steps

  1. Paste a permitted YouTube URL into YGet and open the audio results after extraction finishes.
  2. Choose M4A when your player supports it and you want efficient modern audio; choose MP3 for broad compatibility.
  3. Download the result and remember that converting to MP3 cannot improve the source quality.
